Year of Establishment: 2007
Geography is the study of the Earth with an emphasis on the understanding of space and place. This discipline always works within an ideal interdisciplinary framework appreciating great differences in landscapes, environments, human cultures, economies, political systems across the world and exploring the association between them. Learning through Geography always helps us all to be better informed, more socially and environmentally sensitive and more responsible as citizens and employees.
About The department
The department of Geography started its journey as general course since the inception of the college in 1999. Initially, only general course was offered, but having a great demand from the locality Honours course was started in 2007 with 20 students only. The first Honours batch completed their course in 2010 and was awarded their degrees by the University of North Bengal with one 1st class. The student intake capacity gradually increased in almost every year for being the only college in the locality with a popular course like Geography. Currently the department offers B.A Honours and Programme course in Geography, affiliated to Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University at the undergraduate level.

Why Study Geography?
There are many reasons students might choose Geography as a subject of study at undergraduate level if they are:
- Interested in experiencing real world experiences about the earth.
- Keen to develop expertise in the interpretation, analysis and representation of maps, data and innovative technologies like remote sensing and GIS
- Seek to achieve an academic degree with a varied employment prospects ranging from Cartographer, town planner, Geographical Information System Officer, Environmental consultant, School teacher and many more.
Highligths
- As part of internal evaluation, seminars on relevant topics from the course Curriculum are organized to provide students a chance to acquire the skill of interaction with others. Besides, class tests, quiz, project works and mock tests for exam preparation are arranged.
- Apart from regular classes the department focuses on remedial class before University exams to provide support to students who are struggling with any topic or paper.
- The classroom is equipped with provision of ICT enabled teaching facility. The department shares the College Computer Laboratory equipped with Open Source GIS Software.
- The department runs an Add- On Course on "Basics of Microsoft Excel and Power-point Presentation" for increasing the employability of students.
- Good stock of equipment including survey instruments, meteorological instruments, stereoscopic devise, aerial photographs, satellite imageries, SOI Topographical maps, rocks and minerals, soil and water testing kits and other drawing and instructional materials creates ideal experiential learning environment.
- Special classes with invitee resource persons from other institutions generates an opportunity of academic exchange for both the students and faculties of the department. So far teachers with expertise in their own fields have delivered lectures at the department. The recent speakers include, Prof. Laxmi Narayan Satpati (Professor, University of Calcutta, Director, HRDC, Academic Staff College), Prof. Sasanka Gayen (Professor, Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University), Prof. Piyal Basu Roy (Professor, Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University), Dr. Writuparna Chakraborty (Assistant Professor, A.B.N Seal College), Partha Das (Assistant Professor, A.B.N Seal College), Uma Sankar Mondal (editor of 'Bhugol O Paribesh' and secretary of Purbasha Eco Helpline Society), Bhupen Barman (Alumni and Assistant Professor of Tufanganj College).
- Conducting workshops on relevant topic is always a priority of the department. In 2019, the department organised a week-long workshop on "QGIS: An Elementary Understanding" in collaboration with Cooch Behar College.
- The department regularly organizes classes by the meritorious ex-students to support them in enhancing their teaching skills. Currently three ex-students are serving the department as Teaching - Learning Assistants.
- To provide opportunity to the students for self-expression in written form, the department publishes yearly Wall Magazine 'VIBGYOR' on any current topic of importance.
- The students are encouraged to make Posters in each month on any relevant topic from the syllabus.
- To raise awareness and encourage efforts to protect the environment, the department observes World Environment Day as part of department specific Observance Day. It also has introduced a 30-hour duration Awareness Programme on "Know the Soil and Water in your Surrounding".
- The department encourages to unfold the cultural skills of the students by conducting different cultural programs on the occasion of Teachers' Day, Fresher's Welcome and Farewell Programme
- The social initiative of the department includes formation of 'Equipment Bank' donated by the former students of the department itself to help economically backward wards.
- The department conducts Community Service Programme "Doing Good Together" in nearby tea garden areas or orphanage.
- In order to foster a better learning environment and to enhance the communication between guardians and teachers, yearly parent-teacher meeting is organised.
- The departmental students are encouraged to participate in Career Oriented courses, Add-On Courses, NSS units, games and sport activities.
